Shannon Albeke is a Senior Research Scientist and Ecoinformaticist at the University of Wyoming's School of Computing and Wyoming Geographic Information Science Center (WyGISC). He holds a PhD from the University of Georgia and a BA from the University of Colorado Boulder. His work focuses on applied GIS, data science, ecological modeling, and UAS-based vegetation analysis, with a strong emphasis on open-source tools and scientific outreach.
Education:
- PhD, University of Georgia, Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources (2010)
- BA, University of Colorado Boulder, Environmental Studies (1997)
Research Interests: Dr. Albeke specializes in ecological process modeling, data science workflows, and the development of open-data platforms. His work integrates cutting-edge geospatial and programming techniques to address environmental challenges such as climate change, land-use impacts, and biodiversity conservation. Recent projects include studies on microbial biogeography, carbon sequestration, and socio-hydrological systems.
Grants & Projects: He has secured over $3.5M in grants from NSF, US Fish and Wildlife, and NASA. Notable projects include NSF EPSCoR grants on microbial communities and CO2 emissions modeling, as well as UAS-based biomass estimation initiatives.
Teaching: Teaches graduate-level courses in data management and GIS fundamentals, emphasizing open-source software like R and Python.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Albeke EcoInfo Lab and collaborates with WyGISC on interdisciplinary projects. Key contributions include the development of R packages like rKIN and rLFT for ecological niche modeling and linear feature analysis.
