Shanglin Liu is a PhD researcher at the Department of Sociology, University of Manchester. His research focuses on racialization, identity formation among Roma communities in the UK, and Japanese colonialism in Manchukuo (1932–1945). He is affiliated with the Stuart Hall Foundation and Manchester China Institute. Shanglin holds an MA in Sociology from the University of Manchester (2022) and a Bachelor of Laws in Sociology from Jilin University, China (2021).
His interdisciplinary work bridges historical sociology, postcolonial theory, and ethnography. Current projects include collaborative research on everyday life under Japanese colonial rule in Manchuria, presented at conferences like the Chinese Sociological Association. His research contributes to UN SDGs related to education and social justice.
He has conducted fieldwork on agrarian communities and policy advocacy for immigrants. His published works analyze empirical methodologies in postcolonial contexts and women’s labor movements in China’s industrialization.
