Shane D Gallagher

Shane D Gallagher is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Associate Program Director at the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, where he leads the Psychiatric-Mental Health NP Program and the Specialty Sequence in Substance Use and Addictive Disorders. He is also affiliated with the NYU Grossman School of Medicine through the Multidisciplinary Addiction Training (MAT) program.

His research focuses on evidence-based interventions for substance use disorders and the development of a multidisciplinary addiction workforce. He is a co-investigator on a National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded multi-site randomized trial examining post-hospital discharge engagement with medication for opioid use disorder. His work emphasizes implementation science, clinical training, and health services research in public and academic hospital settings.

The single recent publication reflects a strong trend in using real-world administrative and clinical data to assess diagnostic accuracy and improve identification of patients with opioid use disorder in public hospitals. His research bridges clinical practice, policy, and education in addiction care.

Gallagher provides technical assistance and practice facilitation to interdisciplinary, hospital-based substance-use treatment teams across New York State. He is actively involved in grant-funded research through NIDA and leads training initiatives such as the NYU MAT program, aimed at preparing non-physician clinicians for careers in addiction medicine. He has advised and trained psychiatric nurse practitioner students through formal clinical programs.

He is involved in the Substance Abuse Research Education and Training active project, contributing to workforce development and implementation of evidence-based practices in addiction care across institutional and state-level partnerships.
