Shandin Pete

Shandin Pete is an Assistant Professor of Teaching in the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver), and holds a concurrent role as Professor-in-Collegia at UBC’s Indigenous Student Collegium. He specializes in Indigenous research methodologies, geoscience education, and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems into scientific frameworks. His research bridges hydrogeology with cultural and social dimensions, focusing on revitalizing Indigenous science traditions through community engagement.

Dr. Pete holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Salish Kootenai College (2000), an M.S. in Geology from the University of Montana (2006), and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (2018). He previously served as Director of the Indigenous Research Center at Salish Kootenai College and has led initiatives to develop hydrology programs and tribal partnerships.

His research interests include Indigenous astronomy, Salish ontological perspectives, and decolonizing geoscience education. Key projects include the UBC Indigenous Strategic Initiative Fund’s First Salmon Ceremony revival and the EaSEIL project, which reimagines field-based learning through Indigenous knowledge integration. His work emphasizes ethical collaboration, curriculum innovation, and Indigenous-led science revitalization.

Dr. Pete has co-led projects such as the Zebra Mussel Prevention Study and the Indigenous Science Research Seminar series. His articles explore topics like Indigenous hydrologic forecasting, tribal perspectives on environmental sustainability, and culturally congruent mentoring models. He actively engages in media outreach, including podcasts and radio discussions on Indigenous science.

Not currently accepting students, he focuses on institutional development, including partnerships with Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students in UBC Science. His work aligns with UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan to foster inclusive, equitable, and community-driven scholarship.
