Dr. Philip Austin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean & Atmospheric Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC), within the Faculty of Science. He leads research in cloud physics, focusing on cloud dynamics, radiative properties, and climate feedback mechanisms. His work emphasizes stratus and cirrus clouds' formation, persistence, and dissipation, with applications to global climate modeling. He holds a B.A. in Physics from Whitman College (1979) and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington (1987), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (1987–1988). He has supervised graduate students in atmospheric science, including studies on convective boundary layer entrainment and cloud-regime dynamics. Austin is Principal Investigator for an NSERC strategic project on cloud-aerosol feedbacks and has contributed to international collaborations like CGILS. His educational efforts include revitalizing computational curricula in geosciences and promoting open-source educational tools.
