Shan Hays is a Professor of Biology at Western Colorado University. He holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Oregon (2001) and dual BAs in Biochemistry and Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University of Colorado Boulder (1994). His research focuses on chromatin structure and gene expression regulation in Neurospora crassa and Drosophila, using genetic and biochemical techniques. He teaches courses including Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology.
Key research projects include analyzing centromere formation via chromatin deletion studies and correlating promoter protein binding with gene expression variability. His work also involves undergraduate students in genomic annotation projects through the Genomics Education Partnership. Hays advocates for equitable STEM education reform, emphasizing active learning and inclusive practices.
He joined Western Colorado University after attending its Academic Decathlon finals as a student, seeking a teaching-focused institution. Office hours are held Monday/Wednesday/Friday 11am-1pm.
