Shahin Dashtgard is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University (SFU), Canada. He holds a B.Sc. (1998) and Ph.D. (2006) from the University of Alberta. His primary research focuses on sedimentology and ichnology of modern and ancient marginal marine environments, with emphasis on depositional systems in convergent-margin basins and their application to petroleum geology. Key areas include sequence stratigraphy of the Nanaimo Basin, tropical cyclone deposits in Taiwan, and fluvio-tidal dynamics in the Fraser River Delta and McMurray Formation.
Dashtgard has been recognized with prestigious awards including the W. W. Hutchison Medal (2020), CSPG Link Award (2013), and James Lee Wilson Award (2012). He serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief of Bulletin of Canadian Energy Geoscience and holds editorial roles in Journal of Sedimentary Research and Ichnos. His teaching spans undergraduate courses like EASC 308 (Field Geology III) and graduate courses in sedimentology, ichnology, and scientific writing.
Research groups associated with Dashtgard include the Applied Research in Ichnology and Sedimentology (ARISE) Group. His work integrates field studies, geochemical analyses, and detrital zircon dating to address questions in basin evolution, reservoir characterization, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
