Shahaduz Zaman

Professor Shahaduz Zaman is a Professor in Medical Anthropology and Global Health at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), University of Sussex. He holds a PhD in Medical Anthropology from the University of Amsterdam and has over 15 years of experience in global health research and teaching. Prior to his current role, he served as an Associate Professor at BRAC University in Bangladesh and held academic positions at the University of Glasgow and Newcastle University.

Professor Zaman's research focuses on hospital ethnography, socio-cultural aspects of communicable and non-communicable diseases, refugee health, end-of-life care, and health policy in low-income countries. His work spans Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Vietnam, and Africa, with grants from ESRC, AHRC, MRC, and WHO. Notably, he co-leads a project on mycetoma in Sudan and is the Principal Investigator of an AHRC-MRC-funded initiative using community theatre to sustain palliative care in Bangladesh.

His teaching includes anthropological approaches to global health, medical anthropology, and health systems in low-income countries. He has supervised numerous research projects, including studies on mycetoma, podoconiosis, and palliative care in marginalized communities. Zaman is also a distinguished Bengali fiction writer, awarded the Bangla Academy Award 2016, Bangladesh’s highest literary honor.

Recent publications highlight his expertise in cultural dimensions of end-of-life care, neglected tropical diseases, and the intersection of digital finance and health trust. His work emphasizes decolonial perspectives and equitable healthcare frameworks, challenging global North-centric models of care.
