Dr. Natalia Ivashikina is a Reader in Health Economics at the Department of Global Health and Infection, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, University of Sussex. She joined the department in December 2017 and has established herself as a leading researcher in economic evaluation of healthcare interventions, particularly for neglected tropical diseases in low- and middle-income countries.
Dr. Ivashikina completed her PhD at Moscow State University in 1996, followed by a Royal Society Fellowship in the UK (1997-1998). She then conducted research at Würzburg University, Germany (1999-2005), and completed an MSc in Health and Social Care Research at Sheffield University in 2011. Prior to joining Brighton and Sussex Medical School, she worked at Bangor University (2008-2013) and Queen Mary University of London (2013-2017).
Her research focuses on economic evaluation methodologies and their application to neglected tropical diseases (podoconiosis, mycetoma, and scabies), HIV, non-medical prescribing, and neonatal care. Dr. Ivashikina's work spans all aspects of economic evaluations, from systematic literature review to statistical analysis and economic modeling. She has established extensive international collaborations with institutions across Africa and Europe. Her recent publications (2020-2025) demonstrate consistent output in high-impact journals, with a clear focus on cost-effectiveness analyses of interventions for neglected diseases and healthcare delivery improvements in diverse settings.
Dr. Ivashikina has secured substantial research funding from NIHR, European Commission, and other sources for projects including the NIHR Brighton and Sussex Centre for Global Health Research (2021-2026), a study on self-neglect (2022-2024), and the RISEinFAMILY neonatal care project (2021-2025). Her research has significant policy implications, with several studies referenced in policy documents and picked up by news outlets.
She leads the postgraduate module on Economic Evaluation in Health Care and supervises undergraduate medical students, MSc students, and PhD candidates. Her teaching emphasizes practical applications of health economics in global health contexts, and she has developed curriculum for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs throughout her career.
