Dr. Shafiq Syed is an NHMRC Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Newcastle's School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy. His research focuses on cancer and stem cell biology, particularly the molecular pathways underlying gynecological cancers. He discovered novel endometrial stem cell markers and identified the cell of origin for endometrial cancer, published in Cell Stem Cell. His work employs advanced techniques like cell-lineage tracing and high-throughput sequencing.
Dr. Syed has 21 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, with an H-index of 7. He has secured over $1.5M in grants, including an NHMRC Investigator Grant (2024–2028). His awards include the Future Leaders Group Award (2020) and multiple travel grants. He teaches courses such as Cancer Biology and Oncology and Mammalian Growth and Development.
Research interests span endometrial regeneration, cancer stem cells, and obesity-driven cancer mechanisms. He leads projects on diagnostic blood tests for endometriosis and targeted therapies for endometrial cancer. Dr. Syed collaborates with institutions like the Hunter Cancer Research Alliance and is a member of the Australian Society of Reproductive Biology.
