Caroline Gargett is an Adjunct Professor (Research) in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Monash Health and Monash University’s Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. She is a world-renowned expert in endometrial stem cell biology and leads the Endometrial Stem Cell Biology Group. Her research has established a new field in reproductive biology through the discovery of stem/progenitor cells in the human endometrium. She is actively involved in high-impact collaborative projects, including those funded by the US Department of Defense and NHMRC, and her work spans translational applications in endometriosis and pelvic organ prolapse.
Her research interests center on reproductive biology, stem cell dynamics, endometrial regeneration, and regenerative medicine. She applies cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell RNAseq, ATACseq, organoid models, and patient-derived xenografts to understand endometrial function and dysfunction. Her work has significant implications for treating gynaecological disorders like endometriosis and pelvic organ prolapse, and she is pioneering cell-based therapies using endometrial mesenchymal stem cells and nanobiomaterials.
The recent trend in her publications (2023–2024) emphasizes the role of menstrual fluid as a diagnostic tool, the origins of stillbirth, and the pathophysiology of endometriosis. These works reflect a shift toward non-invasive biomarker discovery, clinical study design, and interdisciplinary collaboration integrating genomics, clinical obstetrics, and tissue engineering.

Prof Gargett has secured substantial grant funding, including 7 CIA grants from NHMRC, an RD Wright CDA (2007–2011), Senior Research Fellowship (2013–2018), and an Investigator Fellowship (2020–2024). She also obtained funding from the US Department of Defense (AUD 3M, 2019–2022), SIEF (John Stocker Postdoctoral Fellowship), CASS Foundation, Cancer Council Victoria, and other philanthropic bodies. She supervises a research team of postdoctoral scientists, students, and support staff, and is accepting PhD students through Monash University’s Supervisor Connect program.
She leads the Endometrial Stem Cell Biology Group, which comprises 5 postdoctoral scientists, 3 support staff, and 6 students. Her collaborative network includes Prof Grant Montgomery (University of Queensland), Prof Luk Rombauts, A/Prof Anna Rosamilia, Dr Shayanti Mukherjee, and Prof Jerome Werkmeister. She is also actively involved in professional leadership, serving on scientific advisory boards and editorial roles.
