Serena Connolly is a Professor of Classics and Department Chair at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. from Yale University. Her research focuses on Roman social and political history, with a particular emphasis on underrepresented groups such as non-elites, women, and slaves. Recently, her work has expanded to explore intersections of science, technology, and imperial power in Rome. She is the author of *Lives Behind the Laws* (2010), *Wisdom from Rome* (2022), and a forthcoming book on *Learned Emperors* (2025), which argues that Roman emperors strategically adopted intellectual personas centuries before European rulers.
Her teaching includes courses on Roman republican and imperial history, ancient science and technology, and Latin literature. She is affiliated with graduate students in Classics and related fields. Her office is located at AB 6187, CAC.
Key research themes include the Codex Hermogenianus, early Roman legal practices, and the cultural longevity of the Distichs of Cato. Her recent articles address imperial self-fashioning, pharmaceutical politics in the imperial court, and mythological influences on Roman leaders.
