Selcuk Onay is an Associate Professor in the Department of Management Sciences at the University of Waterloo. He is affiliated with the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). His research focuses on behavioral and experimental economics, judgment and decision making, intertemporal choice, and time perception, with emphasis on decision-making under risk, uncertainty, and ambiguity.
Education:
- Doctorate in Management, INSEAD (2007)
- Master's in Economics and Statistics, Université Libre de Bruxelles (2000)
- Bachelor's in Mathematics, Koç University (1998)
Research Interests: Dr. Onay’s work explores how temporal factors influence decision processes, particularly in ambiguous or uncertain conditions. He employs experimental methods to investigate behavioral patterns in intertemporal trade-offs and risk evaluation, often linking outcomes to psychological constructs like goal attainment and path dependency.
Teaching: He has taught courses such as MSCI/MSE 263 (Managerial Economics), MSCI 752/MSE 752 (Behavioral Decision-Making), and MSCI 607/MSE 607 (Applied Economics for Management) since 2020. Recent courses include MSCI 211 (Organizational Behavior).
Publications: His articles span topics like temporal distance effects on ambiguity attitudes, cushion effects in risky choices above goals, and timing uncertainty in intertemporal decisions. These contributions highlight methodological rigor in experimental economics and behavioral insights.
