Dr. Sean Robinson is an Associate Professor of Higher Education and Student Affairs at Morgan State University's Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership, and Policy. With over 25 years of experience in higher education, he has worked across diverse institutional settings including two and four-year campuses, private and public universities, and religiously-affiliated institutions. His career spans both Student Affairs and Academic Affairs, with extensive experience in nearly all functional areas of Student Affairs including admissions, career services, disability services, student life, judicial affairs, counseling, and athletics.
Dr. Robinson's educational background includes a B.A. in Psychology/Classics from University of Virginia, M.Ed. in Counseling Psychology from College of William & Mary, M.B.A. in Human Resource Management/Organizational Studies, and Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership, both from University of Wisconsin-Madison. His career progression began in student activities, continued as a Licensed Professional Counselor, and advanced through various deanships at institutions including Trinity University and Georgetown University.
Dr. Robinson's research primarily focuses on two interconnected strands: sexual orientation identity development among youth and college students, particularly examining LGBTQ representation in popular culture and media; and graduate education mentoring, with emphasis on underrepresented groups. His work employs narrative and arts-based research methodologies to explore LGBTQ faculty experiences, gender identity development, and inclusive educational practices. He has published extensively on topics including queer pedagogy, digital mentoring, campus climate for LGBTQ individuals, and support systems for minority students.
His publications demonstrate a consistent trajectory examining identity, representation, and support structures within higher education, with increasing focus on intersectional approaches to understanding LGBTQ experiences in academic settings. Recent work particularly emphasizes non-binary and trans faculty experiences, digital mentoring approaches, and the impact of media representation on identity development.
Dr. Robinson has received recognition for his contributions to the field, most notably the ACPA Annuit Coeptis - Senior Professional award in 2002, which honors outstanding service to the field, excellence in research/scholarship, and demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring. His scholarly work appears in journals such as International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education, Women & Language, and Academic Exchange Quarterly.
As an educator, Dr. Robinson teaches courses in higher education administration, student affairs administration, student development theory, organizational behavior, leadership development, and research methodology. He actively mentors graduate students, with several publications co-authored with student researchers. His professional service includes editorial board memberships and active participation in organizations including the American Educational Research Association, the Association for the Study of Higher Education, and ACPA-College Educators International, where he regularly presents his research at national and international forums.
