Sean Halpin is an Associate Professor and Psychology Clinic Director at the University of Newcastle's School of Psychological Sciences. With over 25 years of clinical experience, he has established himself as a leading researcher in clinical psychology, particularly in the areas of psychosis, early intervention, and mental health interventions. His career spans both clinical practice within mental health services and academia, providing him with a unique perspective that bridges theory and practice.
Halpin completed his undergraduate studies with first-class honors in Psychology at the University of Newcastle, followed by his PhD in Clinical Psychology in 2008. His doctoral research focused on psychosocial well-being during stages of gay identity development. Prior to his academic appointment, he held significant clinical positions including Clinical Leader of the Newcastle Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and Team Leader at the Psychological Assistance Service, an early psychosis outpatient service.
His research interests encompass psychosis (particularly early intervention and management of ultra high risk), modification of risk factors for comorbid physical and mental health problems, stigma, sexual identity development, and working alliance. Recent publications demonstrate his continued focus on innovative mental health interventions, including outdoor 'walk-and-talk' therapy for men with depression, exercise interventions for youth depression, and trauma-focused therapies for children in out-of-home care.
