Matthias Schwannauer is Professor of Clinical Psychology and Head of the School of Health and Social Science at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the Early Psychosis Support Service at CAMHS Lothian. Previously, he served as Head of Clinical & Health Psychology and Director of the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology program at the same university. His career began in NHS mental health services, including roles in Greater Glasgow and NHS Lothian.
Research Focus
His work centers on:
- Developmental Psychopathology: Investigating mental health trajectories in youth, attachment theory, and affect regulation.
- Psychological Interventions: Designing/evaluating therapies for psychosis, bipolar disorders, and severe emotional distress.
- Implementation Science: Applying research to real-world mental health services.
He leads major projects like the FOCUS trial for treatment-resistant psychosis and studies on first-episode psychosis recovery.
Teaching & Supervision
He teaches in the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology program, specializing in:
- Child/adolescent clinical psychology
- Developmental psychopathology
- Therapeutic approaches (CBT, IPT, MBT)
He is open to PhD students researching developmental mental health models.
Affiliations & Labs
He directs the Centre for Applied Developmental Psychology (CAPD) and collaborates with the Edinburgh Child and Adolescent Research Network (ECAP). His clinical partnership with NHS Lothian bridges academic research and frontline mental health care.
