Sean Ewings is an Associate Professor and Head of Statistics at the University of Southampton, affiliated with the Southampton Clinical Trials Unit. He co-leads the statistics team and specializes in gastrointestinal cancer portfolio leadership. His research focuses on cancer trials across all drug development phases, including Bayesian adaptive phase I designs and large-scale phase III trials, as well as interventions for non-cancer conditions involving complex therapies.
He is a member of the Statistical Sciences Research Institute (S3RI) and the Institute of Developmental Sciences. His work spans cardiovascular studies (e.g., BRITISH trial), stroke rehabilitation (IMPS trial), and oncology drug efficacy (e.g., DECIPHER and ELEVATE trials). He holds roles on the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit panel and serves as statistical editor for BMJ Open Gastroenterology.
Notable projects include optimizing endoscopic ultrasound use in oesophageal cancer (VALUE study) and evaluating interventions for alcohol-related liver disease (AlcoChange). His publications emphasize methodological innovations in trial design and interdisciplinary collaboration across cardiology, oncology, and respiratory medicine.
Sean collaborates with institutions like the British Heart Foundation and Alzheimer’s Society, leading projects on Parkinson’s disease resource optimization and influenza point-of-care diagnostics. His research bridges statistical rigor with clinical impact, addressing gaps in treatment personalization and patient outcomes.
