Professor Sean Cooney is a faculty member at the Melbourne Law School, University of Melbourne, specializing in international and comparative labour law with a focus on Asia. He holds the role of Co-Director of Studies in Employment and Labour Relations Law and is a Consultant at the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Switzerland. His research explores legal frameworks for improving working conditions in countries such as China, India, and Vietnam, emphasizing enforcement mechanisms and institutional reform.
Professor Cooney has a background in both academia and legal practice, having worked as a lawyer in employment and administrative law. He earned his degrees from the University of Melbourne and Columbia University. His work includes collaborative projects funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and contributions to global policy discussions on labour standards and digital platforms.
His research interests span legal segmentation in Asia-Pacific, occupational safety during pandemics, and the role of courts in enforcing labour laws. He is affiliated with the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law and the Asian Law Centre at the University of Melbourne, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to labour law challenges.
Professor Cooney has advised governments globally through his ILO consultancy and has authored numerous articles on topics ranging from Chinese labour law reform to the impact of digital platforms on work. His multilingual expertise (Mandarin, French, German) supports his comparative research, and he has contributed to over 50 publications since 1992.
