Scott Wortley is a Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of Edinburgh's School of Law, affiliated with the Edinburgh Centre for Private Law. He holds an LLB (Honours) from the University of Edinburgh (1994) and qualified as a solicitor in 1997. Previously, he worked at the Scottish Law Commission on projects like feudal abolition and real burdens, later serving as an adviser to the Scottish Parliament's Justice 1. He has consulted on legislative reforms, including the Title Conditions (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Bankruptcy and Diligence etc (Scotland) Act 2007. His research focuses on property law, statutory interpretation, legislative processes, and commercial law topics like floating charges and debt enforcement.
Wortley has held academic roles at the University of Strathclyde (2000–2005) and served on professional committees such as the Law Society of Scotland Conveyancing Committee. He co-authored key texts like Scottish Land Law (3rd ed.) and Professor McDonald's Conveyancing Manual. His recent work includes analyzing the Prescription and Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973 and statutory interpretation trends.
