Lorna Richardson is a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of Edinburgh School of Law, where she teaches commercial law subjects at ordinary, honours, and LLM levels both on campus and through distance learning programs. She is a member of the Edinburgh Centre for Commercial Law, which strengthens connections between academia and the legal community in Scotland.
Dr. Richardson's research focuses on commercial law with particular emphasis on contract law, especially interpretation and breach. Her current research examines the influence of English law on the development of Scots contract law in the 19th and 20th centuries, with specific focus on the law of error and recission for material breach of contract. She approaches contract law from historical and comparative perspectives, having previously acted in significant contract dispute cases during her legal practice.
Her scholarly output demonstrates consistent expertise across contract interpretation, commercial leasing, retention rights, and third-party contractual relationships. Recent publications show increasing engagement with European private law frameworks while maintaining a strong Scottish legal perspective. Her work bridges theoretical scholarship with practical commercial applications, particularly evident in her examination of contemporary issues like the impact of COVID-19 on commercial property service charges.
Lorna Richardson has extensive experience providing professional development training to the legal profession, having designed and delivered bespoke sessions for major law firms and the judiciary. She co-presents the Law School's annual contract law update and has co-authored significant legal texts including the latest edition of McAllister's Scottish Law of Leases and multiple editions of Commercial Law in Scotland.
Prior to her academic career, Dr. Richardson worked as a commercial litigator with major Scottish law firms and is qualified to practice in both Scotland and England and Wales (currently as a non-practicing solicitor). She also holds qualifications as a Notary Public and has expertise in commercial leasing, retention and set-off mechanisms, and the historical development of contract law principles.
