Dr Scott Willis is a Researcher at Loughborough University, affiliated with the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre Lifestyle Theme and the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. He holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology (2020) from Loughborough University, focusing on hepatokines and metabolic health. His research interests include exercise, diet, and obesity-related chronic diseases, with a particular emphasis on metabolic dysfunction-associated liver disease and the interplay between lifestyle factors and health outcomes.
Education: BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science (2015), MSc in Exercise Physiology (2016), PhD in Exercise Physiology (2020) – all from Loughborough University. His PhD thesis explored hepatokines, hepatic lipids, and their interactions with exercise and metabolic health, supported by NIHR Biomedical Research Centres in Leicester and Nottingham.
Research focuses on translating findings into public health strategies, including interventions targeting physical activity, sedentary behavior, and dietary patterns. Key areas include smoking’s impact on appetite regulation, interindividual variability in exercise responses, and the role of hepatokines in metabolic health. He collaborates with the Midlands Liver Research Alliance to address liver disease disparities in underserved communities.
His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with publications emphasizing metabolic disease mechanisms, exercise physiology, and health equity. Ongoing projects investigate the effects of physical activity on adipose tissue insulin resistance and ectopic fat distribution, alongside interventions for individuals with spinal cord injury or multimorbidity.
