Scott Lamoureux is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geography and Planning at Queen's University, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts and Science. He holds a PhD in Geomorphology and Sedimentology from the University of Alberta (1998), an M.S. in Climatology and Paleoclimatology from the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1994), and a B.Sc. (Honours) in Physical Geography from the University of Alberta (1990). His research focuses on physical geography, emphasizing hydrology, geomorphology, limnology, and climatology, with a particular emphasis on Arctic environments. He has conducted over 25 years of fieldwork in the Arctic, studying permafrost dynamics, climate impacts on surface waters, and landscape evolution. His work integrates field data, laboratory analyses, and modeling to understand how climate change alters Arctic landscapes and ecosystems.
Dr. Lamoureux is also Associate Head (Undergraduate Programs) in the Department of Geography and Planning and holds cross-appointments with the Beaty Water Research Centre at Queen's University. His teaching includes courses such as GPHY 102, 209, 215, 304, and a graduate seminar on northern processes (GPHY 824). He actively involves students in research projects and fieldwork, emphasizing experiential learning. His research group employs innovative techniques like geophysical surveys, UAV mapping, and subsurface characterization to study Arctic systems.
Key research themes include permafrost thaw impacts on hydrology, climate-driven limnological changes, and the role of summer rainfall in Arctic terrestrial-aquatic connectivity. He collaborates with northern communities and institutions, such as the Northwest Territories Thermokarst Mapping Collective. His work has advanced understanding of Arctic climate resilience and infrastructure vulnerability, with applications for environmental management and policy.
