Nikolay Shiklomanov is a Professor of Geography at George Washington University, specializing in permafrost dynamics and Arctic environmental systems. His work bridges physical geography, climatology, and socio-economic impacts of climate change in northern regions. He holds a Ph.D. in Climatology from the University of Delaware (2000) and has conducted fieldwork across the Arctic since the 1990s.
Research focuses include long-term permafrost observations, climate-infrastructure interactions, and socio-economic challenges in Arctic development. Notable contributions include leadership in the Circumpolar Active Layer Monitoring (CALM) program and analyses of permafrost degradation costs. He has secured grants totaling over $1.8 million from NSF and NASA for projects integrating field data with satellite observations to study permafrost landscapes.
Teaching includes courses on Physical Geography, Climatology, and Arctic Environments. His interdisciplinary approach addresses both natural processes (e.g., thermokarst, active layer dynamics) and human dimensions (e.g., infrastructure vulnerability, urban sustainability in Arctic cities like Norilsk and Vorkuta).
Recent work highlights include assessing climate change impacts on Russian Arctic infrastructure, analyzing vegetation-permafrost interactions in Alaska, and quantifying economic costs of permafrost thaw. He collaborates internationally on initiatives like the Northern Eurasia Future Initiative (NEFI) to address 21st-century Arctic challenges.
