Philip Marsh is a Professor in the Department of Geography at Wilfrid Laurier University and holds the Canada Research Chair in Cold Regions Science. His research focuses on Arctic hydrology, snow and permafrost dynamics, climate change impacts, and ecosystem interactions. He leads the Arctic Hydrology Research Group and is associated with the Trail Valley Creek Research Watershed in the Northwest Territories, Canada.
His work integrates field measurements, remote sensing, and modeling to study Arctic environments. Key areas include snowpack properties, thaw subsidence, greenhouse gas fluxes, and the effects of shrub expansion on hydrology and permafrost. He collaborates with international initiatives like NASA’s ABoVE program and the Changing Cold Regions Network (CCRN).
Marsh’s publications analyze spatial and temporal patterns in Arctic systems, emphasizing snow-water equivalence, radar backscatter modeling, and climate feedback mechanisms. His research highlights the vulnerability of Arctic ecosystems to warming, including permafrost thaw, thermokarst lake dynamics, and shifts in vegetation cover.
He supervises graduate students and teaches courses in geography and environmental science. His office is located in Arts 3E18, and he maintains a personal website detailing ongoing projects and data repositories.
