Dr. Scott Hayward is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biosciences, University of Birmingham, where he has worked since 2004. His research focuses on how terrestrial invertebrates (insects, mites, nematodes) adapt to environmental stress through molecular mechanisms, diapause, and ecological strategies. He also investigates climate change impacts on polar and tropical species and leads insect research at the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) FACE Facility.
- Education:
- BSc in Zoology, University of Edinburgh
- PhD, University of Birmingham
Dr. Hayward’s research spans four key areas: environmentally adaptive dormancies (insect diapause), molecular mechanisms of multi-stressor responses, life in extreme environments (Antarctic and Arctic species), and climate change effects on insect phenology and biodiversity. His work combines post-genomic tools with ecological field studies.
Notable collaborations include the British Antarctic Survey and industry partners in insect-based pollination and biocontrol. His publications emphasize cold tolerance, thermal biology, and stress physiology. Awards include Royal Society and Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowships.
- Teaching Roles:
- Head of Biology Degree Programme
- Module organiser for BIO389 Adaptation to Changing Environments
- Teaches across undergraduate modules including Evolution, Ecology, and Alpine Ecosystems
Dr. Hayward is actively involved in research-led teaching through the Higher Education Futures Initiative (HEFI) and advocates student-centered learning approaches.
