Prof. Dr. Scott A. Lukas is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at Lake Tahoe Community College. He served as a guest professor at the Center for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz during the Summer Semester 2013. His expertise lies in theme park research, cultural mediation, and the interplay of temporality in themed spaces. His work includes seminal publications such as Theme Park (2008) and The Immersive Worlds Handbook (2013), which explore the design, cultural implications, and immersive strategies of themed environments.
Lukas's research focuses on how theme parks mediate cultural and historical narratives through selective representation, abstraction, and multi-sensory immersion. During his ZIS tenure, he collaborated on a DFG-funded project analyzing 'Aesthetic Proper Times in Theme Parks,' examining how time and temporality shape cultural transmission in these spaces. He delivered lectures on topics like 'Coney Island and the History Magic of Theme Parks' and hosted workshops on research methods in consumer spaces.
