Sayuri Guthrie Shimizu

Sayuri Guthrie Shimizu is the Dunlevie Family Chair and Professor of History at Rice University, serving as Interim Director of Undergraduate Studies. Her research focuses on US international relations, particularly US-East Asian dynamics since the 19th century. She holds a PhD and MA from Cornell University.

Her research spans US-Japanese relations, transpacific colonialism, global sports history, and ocean resource management. Current projects explore 20th-century North Pacific fisheries governance. Key publications include works on Olympic politics, baseball diplomacy, and postwar economic policies.

Awardees include the Kemble Maritime History Fellowship and MacArthur Peace Studies Fellowship. Active in academic networks like the Woodrow Wilson Center and Institute for Advanced Studies, she has held grants from the NEH, SSRC/Abe, and Mellon Foundation.
