Hiroshi Kitamura is the William E. Pullen Associate Professor of History at William & Mary, specializing in American Studies, film history, and U.S.-East Asian relations. He holds a B.A. from Carleton College (1995), M.A. (1997), and Ph.D. (2004) in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His research focuses on cultural history, Cold War dynamics, and Japanese cinema. Notable works include *Screening Enlightenment* (2010), exploring Hollywood's role in postwar Japan, and an upcoming book on Japanese cinema during Japan's High Growth era. Current projects include a study on Hollywood’s Orientalism and the U.S.-Japan Baseball Diplomacy Project, funded by the U.S. Embassy-Tokyo. This initiative includes symposia, oral histories, and cultural exchanges.
Kitamura has received grants from the Japan Foundation, Toyota Foundation, and Reves Center for International Studies. His awards include the Shimizu Hiroshi Book Award and the Plumeri Award for Academic Excellence (2016). He previously served as Director of Graduate Studies (2014–2018) and Director of the International Relations program (2022–2025).
