Savina Apolloni is a Researcher at the Neurobiochemistry Laboratory within the Department of Biology at the University of Tor Vergata in Rome. She holds a PhD in Neuroscience from the same university, with research conducted at the Cellular Neurobiology Laboratory at Fondazione Santa Lucia/IBCN-CNR. Her expertise spans cellular neurobiology, neuropharmacology, and the investigation of neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases like ALS. Dr. Apolloni collaborates with multiple research groups and has authored numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy (cum laude) from Sapienza University of Rome.
- Master’s degrees in Clinical Trials and Organic Chemistry of Natural Substances, both from Sapienza University of Rome.
- PhD in Neuroscience from University of Tor Vergata.
Her research focuses on in vivo and in vitro models to study neuroinflammation’s role in ALS and microglia-mediated signaling in neurodegeneration. Current projects include:
- Funding:
- "Repurposing niclosamide in ALS" funded by Fondazione Italiana di Ricerca sulla Sclerosi Laterale Amiotrofica – AriSLA.
- "Targeting S100A4 to study the macrophages-muscle cells cross-talk in models of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy" funded by AFM-Telethon.
Dr. Apolloni’s work bridges pharmacological interventions and molecular mechanisms, aiming to address fibrosis and neuroinflammation in ALS and explore S100A4’s role in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. She maintains active collaborations across institutions and contributes to translational research initiatives.
