Sauro Gelichi is a Part-Time Lecturer at Ca' Foscari University of Venice, affiliated with the Department of Humanities. Born in 1954, he graduated from the University of Pisa in 1977 and transitioned to academia after working as an archaeologist at the Archaeological Superintendence of Bologna (1981–1992). He became Associate Professor at the University of Pisa in 1992 and Full Professor at Ca' Foscari in 2004.
His research focuses on the transition from antiquity to the Middle Ages, material culture (especially ceramic production), monastic settlements, and the archaeology of cities founded during the early Middle Ages. He has directed over 500 research projects in Italy and abroad (Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, Montenegro), organized 30+ national and international conferences, and curated 20+ archaeological exhibitions.
- Academic Leadership: Director of SAAME (Interuniversity Centre for Early Medieval Studies, 2018–present), Director of CeSAV (Venice Archaeology Centre, 2019–present), and former President of AIECM3 (2006–present) and Consulta Universitaria per le Archeologie Postclassiche (2011–2018).
- Editorial Roles: Editor-in-chief of Archeologia Medievale and Rivista di Archeologia, co-director of two scientific series, and member of 16 editorial/scientific committees.
Gelichi has contributed to national and international research panels, including MIUR projects (Principal Investigator, 2004–2019), ERC evaluator (2014–present), and ANEP evaluator (2013–present). His work spans environmental archaeology, production/consumption patterns, and Mediterranean ceramic studies.
