Saulius Marcinkevicius is a Professor of Optics at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. He leads the Physics of Light and Matter department within KTH's School of Engineering Sciences (SCI). His research focuses on ultrafast and near-field spectroscopy of GaN-based semiconductor materials, nanostructures, and optoelectronic devices. Key interests include carrier dynamics in quantum wells, defect-engineered injection mechanisms, and the optimization of LED efficiency through V-defects and quantum barrier design. Marcinkevicius has authored over 300 publications, achieving an h-index of 28 (Google Scholar, 2017) with a citation count exceeding 2,400.
He joined KTH in 1992 as a visiting researcher, becoming a full professor in 2009. His sabbatical in 2015–2016 involved collaboration with JS Speck’s group at UC Santa Barbara, USA. Research highlights include pioneering studies on carrier diffusion mechanisms, Mg doping effects in GaN, and photon transport in novel materials like transparent wood. His work bridges fundamental semiconductor physics with applied optoelectronic device development.
Notable contributions include experimental validation of hole injection via V-defects in GaN LEDs and ultrafast carrier dynamics studies in β-Ga₂O₃. Marcinkevicius’ publications span topics from quantum well interface engineering to femtosecond-scale carrier behavior, reflecting his expertise in both experimental and theoretical aspects of semiconductor physics.
