Satu Ojala is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental and Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu. She also holds the position of Academy Research Fellow, leading research in environmental technologies with a focus on catalysis, adsorption, and sustainable material development. Her work integrates industrial waste valorization and circular economy principles into cleantech innovations.
Her research interests span a broad range of environmental and chemical engineering topics, including water and gaseous emission treatment by catalysis, photocatalytic water purification, adsorption technologies, and the development of functional materials from industrial and organic waste streams. She emphasizes the importance of studying materials under real operational conditions, utilizing operando and in situ methods. Her work contributes significantly to sustainable production and emission control in industry and traffic.
Satu Ojala is actively involved in national and international research collaborations and has extensive experience in leading multidisciplinary research projects. She currently supervises 11 doctoral students in her research areas, contributing to the next generation of environmental engineers and scientists.
She is affiliated with research units focusing on environmental and chemical engineering, where she leads efforts in developing innovative solutions for industrial wastewater, mine water, and air emission challenges. Her work bridges fundamental material science with practical environmental applications.
