Ulla Lassi serves as Professor and Head of the Research Unit of Sustainable Chemistry at the Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu. Her research unit comprises over 60 researchers, including 20 senior or post-doctoral members, driving innovation in sustainable chemical solutions for industrial applications.
Her research focuses on material chemistry for industrial use, specializing in novel battery chemicals, adsorbents, and catalytic materials. Key areas include environmental technology, catalysis for process optimization, industrial and mine water purification, waste management systems, steel materials development, and circular economy implementation. These efforts address critical sustainability challenges in resource efficiency and pollution control across multiple sectors.
Professor Lassi has supervised 28 PhD theses and over 120 M.Sc. theses, demonstrating exceptional commitment to academic mentorship. She actively participates in scientific societies and educational committees, holding multiple positions of trust that influence national research policy and curriculum development.
Under her leadership, the Research Unit of Sustainable Chemistry advances high-impact projects including Sustainable Hydrogen for the Bothnia Gulf Cluster, Sustainable Solid-State Lithium-ion Batteries, and Biomass-based carbon applications, positioning Finland at the forefront of green technology innovation.
