Professor Sarah Wydall is a leading academic in Criminology at Swansea University's School of Social Sciences, within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her work focuses on domestic abuse in later life, particularly among older LGBTQ+ individuals and those with dementia. She leads the Dewis Choice Initiative, a trauma-informed intervention for older domestic abuse survivors in Wales, funded by £2.7M from sources like the Home Office and Welsh Government. Wydall co-developed a VR training tool ('Through their eyes') to improve empathy in police responses to domestic abuse. She has contributed to domestic homicide reviews and sits on advisory boards for organizations like Standing Together Against Domestic Violence.
Her research emphasizes intersectional oppressions, qualitative methodologies, and policy reform. Key areas include elder abuse policy gaps, coercive control dynamics, and welfarisation barriers faced by victim-survivors. Wydall teaches criminological theory, qualitative research methods, and dissertation supervision. She collaborates with Aberystwyth University’s Centre for Age, Gender, and Social Justice and has presented globally at conferences like the European Domestic Abuse Conference.
