Franklin W. Olin College of Engineeringمعرفی
Sarah Spence Adams is a Professor of Mathematics and Electrical & Computer Engineering at Olin College of Engineering, where she has been a foundational faculty member. Her career spans both technical research in communications systems and a transformative shift toward K–12 STEM outreach and education, focusing on ethical engagement and accessibility for under-resourced communities.
- Ph.D. and M.S. in Mathematics from Cornell University
- B.S. in Mathematics (summa cum laude) from University of Richmond
Research Interests: Originally centered on algebraic coding theory and graph theory to enhance wireless communication reliability, her work now prioritizes K–12 STEM education, curriculum development, and ethical frameworks in technology. She pioneered the LURE model for undergraduate research and authored educational texts on coding theory and dynamical systems.
Impact & Innovation: Adams designed the course "Math and Engineering for Everyone," enabling Olin students to create hands-on workshops for elementary/middle schoolers through partnerships with YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs. Her team developed virtual Ethics in STEM workshops during the pandemic, addressing tech and social/political dilemmas in breakout rooms. She emphasizes universal design for learning and social justice in STEM access, aiming to break the "STEM cliff" in middle school.
- NSA Young Investigator’s Award (space-time coding research)
- NSF grants: coding theory/cryptology course development, LURE model
Student Collaboration: Adams mentors Olin undergraduates who organize remote and in-person workshops, including "Hiring Committee" scenarios (gender bias in tech) and "Project in Library" dilemmas (academic integrity). Her students co-developed micro-bit-based activities and friction/balance experiments, fostering mentorship bonds with K–12 participants.
