Professor Sarah Moore is Deputy Head of the Department of Social & Policy Sciences at the University of Bath, affiliated with the Centre for the Analysis of Social Policy and Society and Centre for Death and Society. An award-winning scholar, she received the British Sociological Association's Philip Abrams Prize (2009) and the International Crime Fiction Association Prize (2019). Her research examines blame allocation, institutional accountability, and public engagement in legal systems.
Moore's work investigates:
- Transparency and accountability mechanisms in public institutions
- Impacts of legal aid retrenchment on vulnerable populations
- Cultural constructions of gender, risk, and victimhood
- Courtroom broadcasting and virtual justice systems
- Media representations of crime and justice
She currently leads a British Academy-funded project examining litigants in person following UK legal aid reforms. Moore's publications include 'Legal Aid in Crisis' (Policy Press) analyzing the consequences of welfare state retrenchment, and 'Detecting the Social' exploring detective fiction's engagement with social order. Her research receives significant media attention internationally, featuring in outlets like BBC Radio 4, The Atlantic, and The Guardian.
Moore has held leadership roles including Head of Department and Director of Teaching. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she received the University of Bath's Leadership in Learning and Teaching Award in 2023. She welcomes PhD candidates working on crime, justice, and institutional accountability.
