Professor Sarah Montano is a Professor of Retail Marketing at the University of Birmingham’s Birmingham Business School, within the College of Social Sciences. She serves as Deputy Head of Marketing and Deputy Director of Education (Digital), leading digital education and distance learning initiatives. She holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham (2005) and a BSc from the University of Hull (1995).

Her research focuses on retail marketing and consumer behaviour, particularly how retail functions as a community 'third place', experiential retail, and the impact of digital learning. She is also deeply engaged in pedagogical innovation, especially in authentic assessment and graduate employability. Her publications explore experiential learning frameworks and service delivery in retail contexts, reflecting a consistent interest in bridging industry practice with academic teaching.
She has been recognized for her teaching excellence with an Advance HE National Teaching Fellowship in 2023. She is a frequent media commentator, contributing to the BBC and other outlets on retail trends such as Cyber Monday and the future of the high street.
