Sarah McGuinness is a Senior Research Fellow at Monash University's School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine and a Consultant Infectious Diseases Physician at Alfred Hospital. Her dual role combines clinical practice in travel medicine with academic research focused on preventing infections among at-risk populations globally, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. She holds NHMRC and RACP fellowships (2023-2027).
Educated at the University of Melbourne (MBBS 2006), she completed a Diploma in Tropical Medicine (Peru, 2010) and MPH (James Cook University, 2015). Her PhD (Monash, 2019) examined water/hygiene interventions in low-resource settings. During the pandemic, she supported Victoria's public health response through a secondment to DHHS.
Her research emphasizes mixed-methods approaches to improve vaccination strategies, combat antimicrobial resistance, and address health inequities. She leads major projects like TRAVAID (NHMRC-funded) and co-authored over 40 papers/chapters. She chairs ISTM's Digital Communications Committee and edits the Journal of Travel Medicine.
Key achievements include 11 awards, including the 2023 NHMRC Emerging Leadership Fellowship. Current roles include unit coordinator for Monash MPH subjects on infectious disease epidemiology and prevention.
