James McMahon is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases at Monash University, where he also leads the Clinical Research Unit at the Alfred Hospital. He is a clinician-scientist with a national and international reputation in infectious diseases research, particularly in HIV and COVID-19. His work spans clinical trials, public health, and translational medicine.

His research interests focus on clinical trials in HIV cure, including latency reversal agents and non-invasive imaging of HIV reservoirs, as well as optimizing vaccination strategies for immunocompromised individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. He leads large-scale trials such as BOOST-IC and PROPHECY, and has established a prospective biobank with immune profiling data. His recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on adaptive trial design, antiviral pharmacology, and public health interventions.
The trends in his recent work show a deep commitment to improving outcomes in high-risk populations through innovative clinical research, particularly in vaccine response, HIV eradication, and anticoagulation in non-critical COVID-19 patients. James McMahon has secured over $50.5 million in competitive grant funding from NHMRC, MRFF, NIH, and other foundations. He mentors PhD students and is actively involved in grant review panels, including NHMRC and MRC UK. He serves as President of the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM) and co-convener of the 2024 ASHM conference. He is a member of national taskforces on COVID-19 and Monkeypox therapeutics.
He is an Associate Editor for AIDS Research and Therapy and serves on the editorial boards of PLoS One and Australian Prescriber. His leadership extends to organizing major conferences such as IAS 2023 and advising on national HIV elimination strategies through the AFAO Expert Advisory Panel.
