Sarah J. Magnatta is an Assistant Professor of Art History—Global Contemporary Art at the University of Denver’s School of Art and Art History, part of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History from The Ohio State University (2014), an MA from the University of Denver (2005), and a BA from the University of Colorado (2001). Her research focuses on global contemporary art, museum studies, and transnationalism in Tibetan diaspora art. She has curated exhibitions such as Gonkar Gyatso: Intimacy and Immediacy and Tenzing Rigdol’s first U.S. solo exhibition. Her current book project, Contemporary Art of the Tibetan Diaspora, examines the intersection of mobility and cultural identity. She has published in Art Journal, HIMALAYA, and other journals.
Her recent article in HIMALAYA (2024) explores Sonam Dolma Brauen’s art through the lens of indexicality and object biography. Magnatta is committed to challenging art historical and museum hegemonies through her teaching and curatorial work.
