Moyosore Okediji

Moyosore (Moyo) Okediji serves as Professor of Art and Art History in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. His academic journey spans institutions across Nigeria, the United States, and international exhibition spaces, with current teaching responsibilities spanning Art History, African and African Diaspora Studies, and Women's and Gender Studies.

His research centers on African and African American visual cultures, with specialized expertise in Yoruba artistic traditions, Nigerian contemporary art, and diaspora aesthetics. Okediji's scholarly approach integrates historical analysis with hands-on apprenticeship in indigenous African mediums including mat weaving, terra cotta, shrine painting, and textile design.

He has authored foundational texts including African Renaissance, Old Forms, New Images in Nigerian Art and The Shattered Gourd: Yoruba Forms in Twentieth Century American Art, examining the transformation of traditional African forms within global contexts. His publications consistently explore intersections between sacred/secular practices and colonial/postcolonial artistic expressions.

Okediji maintains an active exhibition record with presentations at the New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York), Smithsonian Institution (Washington DC), Corcoran Center (London), and National Museum Gallery (Lagos). His curatorial work includes a decade-long tenure as Curator of African and Oceanic Arts at the Denver Art Museum.

Current teaching includes cross-listed courses such as Diaspora Visions (ARH 345L/AFR 335G/WGS 340) and Africana Women's Art (ARH 346L/AFR 335C/WGS 340), taught synchronously online across multiple departments. His pedagogy connects historical frameworks with contemporary diaspora experiences through comparative analysis of visual culture.
