Sarah Hulsey serves as a Critic in Printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she merges her academic linguistics background with visual arts practice to explore language structures through printmaking and book arts.
Her educational foundation includes:
- BA in Linguistics from Harvard University
- PhD in Linguistics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
- MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia
Hulsey's research investigates the material translation of linguistic systems into visual forms, creating works where syntax and semantics manifest through printmaking techniques. Her interdisciplinary approach examines how textual frameworks can be deconstructed and reimagined as graphic compositions, particularly in artist books and print series that challenge conventional reading experiences.
Her artistic contributions have earned recognition including the 2020 Artist Fellowship Award in Drawing and Printmaking from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Her work resides in over 40 prestigious collections:
- Library of Congress
- Yale University Haas Arts Library
- Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
- Letterform Archive
- Ampersand Foundation (Johannesburg, South Africa)
Hulsey maintains an active exhibition record with solo shows in Cambridge, Boston, and Philadelphia, alongside international group exhibitions. She is represented by Bromfield Gallery in Boston and engages with RISD's academic community through regular critiques and mentorship within the Printmaking department.
