Kelly Taylor Mitchell is an Assistant Professor in the Art and Visual Culture department at Spelman College, where she has been a faculty member since 2019. Her practice bridges printmaking, papermaking, book arts, and immersive installations to explore themes of oral history, Africana Diaspora, and community autonomy.
- Education: BFA in Printmaking from Tufts University and School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; MFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a certificate in Collegiate Teaching.
Research Interests focus on sensorial connections to cultural identity, particularly through smell, and the legacies of swamp marronage and inherited identity. Her work reimagines rituals of Black communities via interdisciplinary installations and artists' books.
Recent Publications include texts on Black artistic practices, feminist activism, and cultural documentation, reflecting her interest in artistic identity and social justice.
- Scientific Awards: Grand Prize at RISD Library Artists' Book Competition (2018); residencies at Women’s Studio Workshop (2020), Anderson Ranch (2019), and Minnesota Center for Book Arts (2018).
Teaching Experience spans institutions like RISD, Virginia Commonwealth University, and community programs such as New Urban Arts. Her courses include Materials and Concepts, Installation Art, and Contemporary Art Making Strategies.
Artworks are held in collections like the RISD Museum, Providence Public Library, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She has exhibited at Project Row House, RISD Museum, and Meek Eaton Black Archives.
