Dr Sarah Gillborn is an Assistant Professor in Psychology in Education at the University of Birmingham’s School of Education, Department of Education and Social Justice. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from Leeds Beckett University (2015) and a PhD in Psychology from the same institution (2020). Her research focuses on critical feminist and qualitative analyses of discourse and voice in education policy, particularly regarding social justice issues like racism, fatphobia, and maternal responsibility.
Her work critiques how psychology as a discipline perpetuates oppression through policies and curricula. She has contributed to the Curriculum Decolonisation Project, addressing racial inequities in higher education. Before joining Birmingham in 2021, she was a Lecturer in Psychology at Staffordshire University, where she developed critical psychology modules. Her publications explore themes such as decolonizing curricula, fatness in public health policies, and institutional racism in academia.
Publications highlight her engagement with systemic inequities, including analyses of ‘childhood obesity’ policies and the role of psychology in reproducing racism. She actively advocates for pedagogical reforms to promote inclusivity and social justice in education systems.
