Sarah Cheshire is an Instructor in the Department of English at the University of Alabama. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alabama (2020) and a BA in Creative Writing and Gender Studies from Oberlin College (2014). Her work focuses on creative nonfiction, poetry, and community-driven art, emphasizing themes like memory, identity, and social justice. She is the author of the award-winning chapbook Unravelings (2017) and has been published in journals such as Brevity, River Teeth, and Scalawag Magazine.
Cheshire’s research interests span Creative Writing, Linguistics/TESOL, and Critical Theory, with specialties in African-American, Early American, and Postcolonial literature. She actively collaborates with local arts initiatives, curates a gallery, and plays banjo in the Tuscaloosa Old Time Music Ensemble. Beyond the University of Alabama, she teaches in the New College Honors Program and at Donaldson Maximum Security Men’s Prison, integrating creative writing as a tool for education and rehabilitation.
Her accolades include the AWP Kurt Brown Prize (2018), a Disquiet Literary Award finalist placement, and a longlisting for the American Shorter Fiction Prize. She currently serves as nonfiction editor for Black Warrior Review, furthering her commitment to fostering literary voices.
