Dr. Sarah Alderson is a Clinical Associate Professor in Primary Care at the University of Leeds and a General Practitioner at Oaklands Medical Centre in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire. She holds academic affiliations with the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, Leeds Institute of Clinical Trials Research, and the Audit and Feedback Metalab. Her research focuses on implementation science, particularly in embedding interventions targeting patients and professionals within primary care settings.
Education: MBChB (2000, University of Leeds), MRCGP (2005), PhD (2012, University of Leeds) on 'Patients Understanding of Depression Associated with Chronic Disease'.
Research Interests: Mental and physical co-morbidity, audit and feedback interventions, opioid prescribing reduction (via the CROP initiative), and leveraging routine primary care data for behavior change. She leads the Campaign to Reduce Opioid Prescribing (CROP), now implemented across northern England, and co-leads the Audit and Feedback Metalab.
Awards & Grants: Principal Investigator on grants from AMS, RCGP, and Wellcome Trust ISSF. Co-investigator on six clinical trials (e.g., DIAMONDS, ENACT, LAMP). Recognized internationally for CROP's success in reducing harmful opioid prescribing without increasing alternative painkiller use.
Teaching & Leadership: Supervises PhD, MSc, and undergraduate health research projects. Serves as a personal tutor and deputy research lead for the Leeds Institute of Health Sciences. Holds a Higher Education Academy Fellowship.
