Prof. Sarah Albiez-Wieck holds a professorship in Modern and Contemporary History with a focus on Latin America at the University of Münster since October 2022. Her research examines colonial fiscal systems, social categorization, and postcolonial identity formations. She leads the Cluster of Excellence project A3-39 on visual stereotyping of religious groups in the colonial Philippines and serves on the management of the Center for Science Communication. Previously, she held positions at the University of Cologne and conducted research in Argentina under a Humboldt Fellowship.
Her academic journey includes a Habilitation in Modern History (2020) and a PhD in Ethnology (2011). Key research areas include colonial taxation, migration, racialization, and indigenous agency in Spanish America and the Philippines. Major publications include Taxing Difference in Peru and New Spain (2022) and Contactos exteriores del Estado Tarasco (2013).
Teaching focuses on colonial and postcolonial Latin America, with courses like 'Gender and Empire: The Philippines under Spanish Rule' and 'Colonial Photography'. She co-organizes the research seminar 'Transcultural Entanglement' and advises doctoral students including Virgilio A.G. Gener. Awards include the Feodor-Lynen Fellowship (2023) and Gerda Henkel Doctoral Scholarship (2007-2010).
