Prof. Margit Kern is a renowned art historian specializing in Early Modern and Late Medieval art, transcultural negotiation processes, and visual skepticism. She holds a professorship at the Department of Art History, University of Hamburg. Her research focuses on the intersection of art, colonialism, and religious imagery in Europe, Latin America, and Spain.
Education: Studied art history, theater studies, and philosophy in Erlangen, Vienna, and Berlin. Earned her doctorate (1998) and habilitation (2010) from Free University Berlin. Held academic positions at Humboldt University Berlin and Free University Berlin before joining Hamburg in 2012.
Research Interests: Visual skepticism, difficult heritage, colonial art, transcultural negotiation, religious art, and photography history. Current ERC project explores re-framing controversial monuments using visual skepticism principles.
Notable Projects: Lead investigator on ERC Advanced Grant 'Visual Scepticism' (2021–2026), SFB 950 'Manuscript Cultures', and Cluster of Excellence 'Understanding Written Artefacts'. Authored/co-authored over 50 scholarly publications and edited volumes.
Awards: Martin Luther Prize (2000), Feodor Lynen Fellowship (2011/12), ERC Advanced Grant (2021).
Professional Roles: Board member of Carl Justi Association, editorial board positions for journals like 'Art in Translation', and member of Academia Europaea.
