Sara Planting-Bergloo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Stockholm University's Faculty of Social Sciences. She works within the research group Encountering Subject Matter Didactics and Post-Theoretical Approaches, which explores how post-theoretical approaches can be used for critical and creative analysis of teaching and learning. Her office is located in Room E269 at Svante Arrhenius väg 20 A in Stockholm.
Planting-Bergloo's research primarily focuses on sexuality education in Swedish schools, particularly examining how post-theoretical frameworks can transform traditional approaches to teaching about sexuality, consent, and relationships. She utilizes theoretical positions offered by Karen Barad and Donna Haraway in her analysis of teacher and student discussions on various phenomena related to sex and sexuality. Her work challenges conventional medical and biological perspectives in sexuality education, advocating for approaches that incorporate cultural, religious, historical, and societal perspectives.
Her research projects include Enacting Sex Education, which investigates interdisciplinary knowledge content in Swedish secondary schools; Sexuality, consent and relationships in the early years of primary school, which explores how knowledge areas can be constructed for teaching younger children (5-13 years old); and UNKA - Teaching About the Nature of Science and Scientific Practices, which examines how high school teachers can develop teaching about the nature and practices of science.
Planting-Bergloo's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on transforming sexuality education through innovative theoretical frameworks. Her work shows a progression from examining specific topics like virginity concepts and contraceptive education toward more comprehensive analyses of how sexuality education can be reimagined through post-qualitative and material-discursive approaches. She has made significant contributions to understanding how to make sexuality education more student-centered, affirmative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives beyond traditional medical frameworks.
Through podcasts, films, and educational models she has developed, Planting-Bergloo has actively engaged with educators and policymakers to improve sexuality education practices in Swedish schools. Her work connects theoretical insights with practical classroom applications, creating resources that support teachers in addressing complex topics related to sexuality, consent, and relationships.
