Auli Arvola Orlander is an Associate Professor in Science Education at Stockholm University's Department of Teaching and Learning. She is actively engaged in research focusing on gender issues in science education and sexuality education within Swedish schools.
Her research interests center on Science Education with a particular focus on gender issues, subject didactics, and post-theoretical approaches to teaching and learning. She explores how gender constructions occur in classroom settings and how sexuality education can be developed across school subjects.
Orlander's recent publications reveal a consistent focus on gender construction in educational settings, particularly examining how femininity and masculinity are represented in science classrooms. Her work analyzes teaching practices around sexuality education, bodily experiences in biology classes, and interdisciplinary approaches to sensitive topics.
She is currently leading two major research projects: 'Enacting Sex Education,' a four-year study funded by the Swedish Research Council examining how sex education is taught across subjects in secondary schools, and 'Sexuality, consent and relationships in the early years of primary school,' a practice-based research project investigating sexuality education for children aged 5-13 years.
With a professional background as a teacher, teacher educator, and educational consultant, Orlander brings practical experience to her research. She works closely with principals and practicing teachers in various research and development projects within schools and kindergartens.
